Chapter 398
That night, Eve had no intention of things turning out the way they did. She never meant to come between Charles and Dahlia, and paid a heavy price for that fateful evening. Eve was just as much a victim, and she refused to let anyone tarnish her daughter's name.
"My daughter was set up! She never wanted to break up anyone's relationship!"noveldrama
"Oh, come on. Your daughter saw dollar signs, plotted to drug him, and jumped into his bed, hoping to secure her future. She's nothing but a homewrecker!"
"And with a daughter like that, you have the nerve to act all high and mighty in front of me!"
The accuser wouldn't back down, calling Evelyn a homewrecker, pushing Josephine to her breaking point.
"I told you, my daughter is not!"
Josephine found herself in a struggle with the accuser. Her health was no match for them, and soon enough, three more joined in. She was quickly overpowered and shoved to the ground hard.
Pain shot through her chest, her complexion turning ghostly pale, cold sweat drenching her hair and clothes. Things were looking dire.
The group exchanged glances, noticing Josephine's distress, and made a quick exit.
Not far away, Dahlia sat watching from a wheelchair, hidden under a hat and sunglasses. She observed Josephine writhing on the ground with icy detachment. They had chosen this secluded hospital spot carefully. At this hour, it was deserted.
Dahlia had heard about Josephine's fragile health, how she couldn't handle any shocks. Seeing her in this state now, she thought perhaps she might actually keel over. Dying would be the best-case scenario.
Dahlia watched without emotion until Josephine struggled for breath and went still. Just then, someone started approaching. Not wanting to be spotted, Dahlia quickly wheeled herself away, dodging security cameras, and quietly left the hospital. swnovel
Even if the old woman didn't die this time, the stress would further weaken her. The surgery already had a low chance of success, and with her deteriorating
condition, she'd likely not survive the operating table.
Dahlia savored the idea of Josephine's demise, picturing Evelyn so devastated she'd fall apart, unable to bounce back, maybe even spiral into depression again... Dahlia was eager to see how Evelyn would manage to rise from this. swnovel.net
A broken woman-Charles would never choose her. In the end, Charles would come back to her.
As Dahlia left the hospital's rear entrance, she was about to call for a cab when she realized her jade pendant was missing. It was a keepsake Charles had once gifted Debbie, a unique piece Charles had worn since childhood.
If the old woman died and the pendant was found near her body, how could Dahlia explain? That's why she spread the rumors and paid others to provoke Josephine instead of confronting her directly-she didn't want Charles to find out. swnovel
Even though Charles had ended things, as long as she stood in as Debbie, she believed he'd come back to her someday.
Determined, Dahlia wheeled her chair back to the scene. When she got there, Josephine, who had been knocked out, had somehow regained consciousness. Wobbling, she stood and made her way toward the fallen pendant.
Dahlia spotted her pendant and hurriedly wheeled towards it. But Josephine got there first, picking it up with a start.
The pendant seemed so familiar. It looked just like the one Charles had given Eve, the one Eve had misplaced.
