The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 419

"Ah!"

The nurse felt like her shoulder blade was going to shatter from the kick. Her face twisted in agony, every feature clenched in pain. In that instant, a thought flickered in her mind. Had Evelyn and Mr. Jenkins figured something out? No way! She was sure no one had been in the hallway. She'd even drawn the curtains, leaving no room for anyone to know.

Panicking, she tried to calm herself. Meanwhile, Evelyn had already yanked out her IV, tossed back the covers, and swung her legs over the edge of the bed.

"Eve!" Charles was instantly on alert, reaching for Evelyn's shoulder. "Let me handle this. I won't let her get away with it." Evelyn was too frail for this.

She shrugged off his hand, making her way directly to the nurse. Charles frowned but didn't hold her back, trailing closely behind, ready to step in if needed.

The nurse watched Evelyn approach. Between Evelyn and Charles, Evelyn was definitely the more approachable one. Charles was downright terrifying. One look from him was enough to convince her she was a breath away from disaster.

"Ms. Evelyn, please, you've got to believe me. I had nothing to do with it..." The nurse's protest died on her lips as Evelyn thrust her phone in front of her face, a video playing on the screen.

The nurse's face blanched. On Evelyn's phone was footage of her tampering with Josephine's oxygen tube. Instinct took over, and she lunged for the phone, desperate to erase the evidence.

But before she could even graze it, Charles lashed out with his foot, sending her hand flying. A sharp jolt of pain shot through her wrist, leaving it limp as she broke out in a cold sweat.

Evelyn gripped the nurse's jaw, her eyes cold and lethal. "Who put you up to this?"

Charles hesitated at the question. "Eve!" he said softly, catching the drift of Evelyn's suspicion. She was pointing fingers at Dahlia again!

"Sandy's organ rejection was being monitored, and Dahlia was with me the whole

time. This has nothing to do with her," Charles insisted.

The nurse swallowed back her words. The way this man was shielding Ms. Dahlia, maybe if she did the same, Dahlia would protect her too.

"No one..." she decided, shaking her head.noveldrama

"Eve, you should rest," Charles urged gently, feeling the frustration of Evelyn constantly tying everything back to Dahlia.

Evelyn ignored him, her mind set.

The nurse

had no motive to harm

her mother unless Dahlia had her in her pocket. Seeing the nurse stay tight-lipped, Evelyn twisted the injured wrist further. "Who put you up to this?"

Charles frowned! Seeing Evelyn's resolve, he worried about her strength, giving out. He stepped in,

pressing his foot against the nurse's

most painful spot. His voice was unyielding, "Answer Eve!"

The pain was so intense the nurse wanted to scream, but Charles's gaze kept her silent. Her mind was on the verge of shutting down. What was Mr. Jenkins playing at? Who was he really defending?

The agony left no room for thought. Under Charles's daunting presence, she

blurted out, "It was Ms. Dahlia!"
