The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 456

Evelyn couldn't hide her shock as she looked up at Charles.

"Eve, I'm telling the truth. I didn't lie to you. The moment another matching kidney was found, I switched it out so Sandy could have it," Charles said earnestly, meeting Evelyn's gaze. "I know what you and Adam are worried about. If there had been any other option, I would never have chosen Adam to donate his kidney to Sandy."

"It was never my intention to force him," Charles continued, trying to show Evelyn just how sincere he was. He hoped she would understand why he did what he did. From the start, he never wanted to use Adam's kidney. If he had, he wouldn't have bothered telling them, letting them decide for themselves. He had been searching for a suitable donor all along. But when Sandy's situation became critical, he felt he had no choice but to pressure Adam.noveldrama

"The things I said in the hospital weren't true. I'd never harm you, and Adam is your close friend; I'd never really hurt him either," he admitted, knowing full well how Adam felt about Eve. Saying those things was the only way to get Adam to agree to sign the voluntary donation agreement.

Evelyn let out a cold laugh, unimpressed by Charles's heartfelt confession. She saw right through his words.

So, he acted as if he didn't know. If he truly hadn't known, maybe it would be forgivable. But the fact that he was fully aware and still made those choices was unforgivable. She looked at Charles with icy eyes and said, "Charles, are you expecting me to thank you for not using Adam's kidney in the end?"

"That's not what I meant!" Charles protested, his brows knitting together. He was just stating the facts.

"Charles, I get what you're trying to say. You're saying all this to ease your conscience, aren't you? But do you really think you deserve that?"

"Do you honestly believe that just because you switched donors at the last minute and didn't use Adam's kidney, everything's all good now?"

"It was pure luck that a donor became available at the last second. What if there hadn't been one?"

That "what if" hit Charles right in the chest, leaving him speechless. He knew that if there hadn't been another option, he would have let the surgery go on.

"Charles, you know how Charlie died, and you know why Adam signed up at the donor center. You were aware of all of it, yet for Sandy, you once again ignored Charlie and her feelings."

"You did what you did, so don't pretend you can dodge the guilt, if you even have

a conscience."

Evelyn's words were merciless,

stabbing at Charles's heart, making his face go even paler. There was no softness in Evelyn's eyes. She was doing it on purpose. There was no way she would let Charles off the hook so easily. sŵnovel

Charles's lips pressed tighter together. The physical pain from his injuries was nothing compared to the ache in his heart.

Not far away, Dahlia heard Charles's words and felt her mind go blank for a moment. When she finally snapped out of it, she pushed past the nurse and rushed forward, "It wasn't Adam?"

She had seen Adam being taken in by the doctors with her own eyes How could it have been a stranger? If it wasn't Adam, she wouldn't have the chance to keep provoking Evelyn in the future.

What a stroke of luck for that woman! Evelyn really did have the devil's own luck. Even after Adam was taken in, Charles managed to find another matching kidney.
